Orthopedic Surgeon

Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of musculoskeletal system by surgical and conservative means.

Duties and Responsibilities

Orthopedic Surgeons examine, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of musculoskeletal system by surgical and conservative means, and the application of corrective mechanical devices. They perform surgical procedures, then reduce and immobilize fractures by open or closed methods, using such corrective devices as braces, casts and splints.

The Orthopedic Surgeon directs nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and operating room techniques, advises on the kind and quantity of orthopedic supplies and equipment, and serves as consultant on orthopedics.

Duties and Responsibilities

In the civilian medical community, physicians’ duties and responsibilities depend upon where they decide to work. They may work in managed care, private practice or academic medicine. In managed care, a health plan pays a fixed monthly fee per member to a physician and the physician agrees to provide specific services to the health plan member.
