Duties and Responsibilities
The Foreign Area officer formulates Air Force positions on combined politico-military affairs, developing policy positions on international political problems of national, combined or joint service interest, and making recommendations on treaties, international agreements and politico-military plans, policies and procedures. Responsibilities include assisting in the development, coordination and implementation of National Security Council policies and National Policy Papers and guidelines for policy and operations papers on a worldwide basis.
Foreign Area officers monitor Air Force interests in international affairs and represent the Air Force on international staffs, projects, surveys, advisory groups, missions and defense boards. They also participate in treaty and agreement negotiations affecting the Air Force, conduct research on world or area politico-military affairs, and advise on the political implications of war plans.
Although the civilian sector does not have a direct correlation for Foreign Area Officer, jobs such as foreign ambassador, State Department representative, corporate international liaison, etc., all require the foreign area expertise. Plus the leadership and management training all Air Force officers receive is high valued among America’s top companies.
