Duties and Responsibilities
Nurse-Midwives render comprehensive care to women from menarche through menopause, evaluating the prenatal patient's condition and formulating a plan of care to maintain healthy progress. They administer medications and treatments within delineated parameters and institute lifesaving emergency measures pending obstetrician's arrival. Other responsibilities include facilitating the postpartum patient's optimum physical and psychological transition to parenthood, and caring for newborns following delivery.
The Nurse-Midwife manages a variety of gynecological conditions, performing annual health screening examinations and referring patients with complex problems for physician management. The Nurse-Midwife is also responsible for providing family planning counseling and various methods of birth control, and prescribing hormonal replacement therapy for menopausal women.
