Allergist

Examines, diagnoses, performs diagnostic tests and treats allergic disorders, and also manages allergy services.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Allergist examines, diagnoses and treats allergic diseases - preparing and reviewing case histories and obtaining data through interviews. Responsibilities include examining patients, interpreting tests results, evaluating findings, prescribing specific medications, diets and immunotherapy, and, in emergencies, treating patients suffering from anaphylactic shock, angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm and other severe allergic diseases.

Allergists manage allergy services - formulating plans and procedures for allergy services, scheduling clinic and allergic testing, and assigning nurses and medical technicians. They also advise on the kind and quantity of allergy supplies and equipment, coordinate allergy services with other medical activities, and instruct interns, residents and fellows in allergy procedures.

A civilian allergist's duties and responsibilities are similar to those of their military counterparts and depend upon where they decide to work. They may work in managed care, private practice or academic medicine.
