Critical Care Medicine

Examines, diagnoses and treats, by surgical and nonsurgical means, diseases and injuries in critical care units.

Duties and Responsibilities

Critical Care officers examine, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries by surgical and nonsurgical means - preparing and reviewing case histories and obtaining data through interviews. They examine patients and determines whether x-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests are required, then interpret test results and evaluate examination findings before prescribing treatments such as drugs, physical therapy, dietary regimens and surgical procedures for diseases and injuries.

The Critical Care officer manages critical care activities - formulating plans and procedures for critical care activities, scheduling the use of critical care facilities, and assigning nurses and medical technicians. Other responsibilities include advising on the type and quantity of supplies and equipment, coordinating critical care with other medical activities, and instructing residents in critical care.
