Radiotherapist

Participates in the multi-disciplinary management of cancer patients, and treats pathological conditions with various types and sources of radiation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Radiotherapists provide consultation regarding cancer management - consulting with other medical officers in the diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow-up of patients with malignant diseases. They interview and examine patients, review radiographic and other imaging studies, laboratory data, histopathological slides and other diagnostic information, and advise regarding suitability for radiation therapy.

Radiotherapists administer or supervise the administration of various types of radiation, selecting the most appropriate technique or modality and determining daily and total radiation doses. They maintain records of all therapy administered, monitor clinical response during therapy, and conducts and advise as to follow-up evaluations.

A civilian diagnostic radiotherapist's duties and responsibilities are similar to those of their military counterparts. In the civilian medical community, radiotherapist's duties and responsibilities depend upon where they decide to work. They may work in managed care, private practice or academic medicine.
