Diagnostic Radiologist

Makes and interprets diagnostic images, performs special procedures and manages radiological services.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Diagnostic Radiologist makes and interprets diagnostic images, reviewing requests for x-ray, nuclear radiology, ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and other diagnostic imaging procedures, and determining the applicability of requested procedures. Responsibilities include instructing radiologic personnel in desired techniques, positions and projections, and also interpreting images and conferring with medical and dental officers regarding diagnoses of cases.

Diagnostic Radiologists perform a variety of special imaging procedures, including fluoroscopy, tomography, angiography, nuclear imaging, ultrasound and computed tomography. They determine the need for referral of cases that are not within local capability, and serve as consultant in radiology.

A civilian diagnostic radiologist's duties and responsibilities are similar to those of their military counterparts. In the civilian medical community duties and responsibilities depend upon where they decide to work. They may work in managed care, private practice or academic medicine.
