Psychiatrist

Examines, evaluates, diagnoses and treats psychiatric disorders, and also manages and directs psychiatric services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Psychiatrists examine, evaluate, diagnose and treats psychiatric disorders - preparing and reviewing case histories and obtaining and evaluating data through interview techniques. They also diagnose psychiatric disorders, prescribe and evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of therapeutic measures, and recommend disposition of psychiatric cases.

The Psychiatrist manages and directs psychiatric services - formulating plans for psychiatric services, directing mental health clinics, and advising on problems related to mental health and the prevention of mental disorders. Responsibilities include serving as medical and psychiatric consultant to clinical psychologists and clinical social workers, advising on the kind and quantity of psychiatric supplies and equipment, and instructing interns and residents in psychiatric principles and procedures.
