Neurologist

Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and disorders of the nervous system.

Duties and Responsibilities

Neurologists examine, diagnose and treat neurological diseases and disorders, preparing and reviewing case histories and obtaining data through interviews. They also examine patients, determine the need for clinical laboratory tests, and interpret examination findings and test results before prescribing neurological treatment.

The Neurologist manages neurological services - formulating plans and procedures for neurological services, scheduling the use of diagnostic and treatment facilities, and assigning nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and medical technicians. Other responsibilities include coordinating neurological services with other medical activities, instructing interns and residents in neurological techniques, and supervising medical technicians in operation of electroencephalographic apparatus and other neurological diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

In the civilian medical community, physicians' duties and responsibilities depend upon where they decide to work. They may work in managed care, private practice or academic medicine. In managed care, a health plan pays a fixed monthly fee per member to a physician and the physician agrees to provide specific services to the health plan member.
