Veterinary Clinician ![]()
Duties and Responsibilities
Veterinary Clinicians manage independent and collaborative research or other applications of the relevant clinical specialty with programs using animals - conducting research in zoonosis to learn their incidence and prevent their spread to humans and other animals. They direct personnel engaged in husbandry, care and treatment of animals addressed by the specialty and those engaged in animal research projects, and also prevent and control zoonotic diseases through disease diagnosis, treatment and immunization of animals.
Veterinary Clinicians provide professional service in the veterinary clinical specialties, furnishing consultation and advice pertaining to the procurement, preparation and use of military dogs, laboratory animals and other government-owned animals. They also instruct personnel and provide consultation and instruction to scientific investigators, other users of government-owned animals, and animal technicians in areas peculiar to the specialty that enhance the care and use of the animals.

Veterinarians play a major role in the health care of pets, livestock, and zoo, sporting, and laboratory animals. Most veterinarians perform clinical work in private practices. Some veterinarians use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals and conduct clinical research on human and animal health problems. Others work in basic research, broadening the scope of fundamental theoretical knowledge, and in applied research, developing new ways to use knowledge.
